10 Tips on How To Care for Your Pearl Jewellery

Gold Pearl Bee Necklaces Rachel Whitehead Jewellery

I love pearls so much, and by the looks of it so do you guys, the Pearl Bumblebee Necklace and the Pearl Acorn range are my best sellers year on year.

The beautiful lustre and natural colour variations are what get me most excited (hands up, who's a jewellery geek?) just like people, no two pearls are the same.

Pearls can be damaged with incorrect care, so here's a helpful rundown on how to keep your pearls looking good as new.

Enjoy!

1. DO WEAR YOUR PEARLS

When you're not wearing your pearls keep them safe in the box you bought them in, or a silk bag. If pearls are stored alongside your other jewellery in your jewellery box they run the risk of being scratched.

 3. DO WIPE YOUR PEARLS AFTER BEING WORN

Give your pearls a wipe with a chamois or microfibre cloth after you've worn them to remove any traces of perfume or perspiration.

4. DO GIVE YOUR PEARLS AN ANNUAL CHECK UP

Have a good look over your pearls looking particularly for discolouration, any stretching in the string if your pearls are strung and make sure your pearls are still held securely.

5. DO HAVE YOUR PEARLS CLEANED BY AN EXPERT

If you wear your pearls often a yearly clean by an expert is a really good idea to prolong the life of your jewellery.

6. DO LET YOUR PEARLS BREATHE

Pearls need to breathe, a storage environment too dry, hot or lacking in fresh air can eventually dull the lustre (shine) of pearls. Steer clear of airtight boxes or ziplock bags. Without air the nacre of pearls can crack and turn yellow.

7. DO TAKE OFF YOUR PEARLS

Make sure you take off your pearls when around water, when you're likely to sweat and around any chemicals.

8. DO PUT YOUR PEARLS ON LAST

Always put your pearl jewellery on last. Allow your hairspray, moisturisers and perfumes dry before putting on your pearls. Build up of cosmetics and scents can dull the lustre of your pearls and can eventually eat away at the nacre.

9. DO STORE YOUR PEARLS FLAT

Storing strung pearls in a hanging position can stretch the string, instead store your pearls flat.
